It’s not a secret that I heart all things Baker Creek. A couple of weeks ago I was able to get the book by Jere and Emilee Gettle called, The Heirloom Life Gardener The Baker Creek Way of Growing Your Own Food Easily and Naturally. I’ve been pouring over it and I must say, this is a book you’re going to want to get!
The Heirloom Life Gardener
The New York Times calls Jere Gettle, “the Indiana Jones of seeds.” I totally get that. The Gettles passion for purity and growing your own food seeps in and infects you with desire to go forth and grow!
The lovely pictures and illustrations add to the scrapbook type feel of this nicely bound tome. Pictures including personal pictures of the Gettle family plus lovely pictures of all kinds of fruits and vegetables grace nearly every page, pulling you forward.
I love the descriptions of the vegetables, they make you want to order every single one, I even want the Lima beans now, and I despise Lima beans. (Okay, I’m not getting the Lima beans, but you understand, they make them sound so delicious, it could be worth giving them another try?)
It goes without saying that I was already predisposed to like the book, I realize that. However, I was not expecting to be bowled over by it. I will suggest that every gardener, even those that do not garden organically read it. I’m getting a copy for my father in law and he doesn’t even pretend to grow organic.
A Different Way of Life and Looking at Life
I guess if I had to boil down the fat and pinpoint my favorite thing about The Heirloom Life Gardener it would have to be that it clearly show a different, but viable way of life and a refreshing way of looking at life. My kids are all homeschooled, the Gettles were homeschooled and homeschool their daughter. This is a major company run by people just like us. That’s cool.
They are living off the land and thriving. That’s cool.
They are helping their community and the planet with their choices. That’s cool.
They are listening to their own drum. That’s cool.
This book is paisley. That’s cool.
Have a great Monday!~KeriAnne
