Did You Say Melon Jam?

Did You Say Melon Jam?

I just want to know if I heard you correctly. Did you say melon jam?

Why yes, yes I did.

The story goes…girl loves melons…girl plants melons…lots of melons. What to do with all of these melons? We’ve grilled them (yum, by the way) dressed them (rice vinegar, raspberry and lime is our favorite) and slathered them in yogurt, now what? To tell the truth, we’ve even made them in to delicious bowls for vanilla bean ice-cream, also great, still there’s more.

The only thing to do now is save them for the winter. The way to do that? Melon Jam. Let me get this straight…

Melon jam anyone?

So, Here’s the Plan…

So, Here’s the Plan…

So, here’s the plan…

This week is all about harvesting and replanting.

Last year I missed having pumpkins ready for Halloween by about four days. This year, we’ll have them! The only way that can happen though is if I get the corn harvested and the new pumpkins planted. So, it’s going to be a busy week. Add to that, the Vert Grimppant melons are ready to pick, plus several dozen cucumbers, well, what am I doing inside?

So, here’s the plan…

On Monday, the corn gets got (love that Texas twang?), the squash gets yanked and the pumpkins get planted.

Tuesday, melons come in, cucumbers too, and the zinnias get a well deserved deadheading.

So, here's the plan...pickles

Is it Time to Feed You Again?

Is it Time to Feed You Again?

Friday seems to come faster and faster these days. = ) Is it time to feed you again?

Today I have a Gunz creation that has morphed into a fun, easy tradition.

It’s Friday, it must be time to feed you again!

Tuesdays are omelet day at the Gunz’. Each person fills out their “order” sheet that includes all of the ingredients on hand for fillers and each person gets a personalized omelet. There is even a fill in section for “extras” I may have forgotten to list. I draw the line at peanut butter, you’ll have to spread that on yourself. Some winner combinations included Durkee onion rings (you know, the kind you put on green bean casserole?) and cheddar cheese. Some incredible fail combos included Spagettio’s, let’s just say, it wasn’t pretty, and the recipient ended up with a mushroom and Swiss in the end.

This time honored tradition has been followed with other “You Build It” variations. Friday is usually homemade pizza day. You pick your topping, I make pan size crusts, you build your pizza, the Parsnip cooks them (because he doesn’t scoff at lifting out the pizza stone a dozen times, especially when homemade pizza is involved).

Our most recent build it yourself involves sliders made to order. We use King rolls for buns or sometimes I make them. In a pinch we have used English Muffins with good results.

Feed Me! (It must be Friday) An Easy Chicken Nugget recipe

Feed Me! (It must be Friday) An Easy Chicken Nugget recipe

My family is not crazy about chicken nuggets. (I know, they’re weird) However, I have an easy chicken nugget recipe that they think is the bees knees.

A few years ago, a lapse in shopping created this strange vacuum that threatened to starve my children to death (very dramatic). It seemed we had very few things with which to make a supper. We had the box store size bag of chicken nuggets, two jars of homemade spaghetti sauce and some cheese. This easy peasy recipe was born from that fateful day.

This is great for date night, whip up this easy chicken nugget recipe before you and the hubby go out. Win-win.

Throwback Thursday: White Wonder Cucumber

Throwback Thursday: White Wonder Cucumber

If you have been reading The Paisley Carrot for a while now, you know I’m crazy for cucumbers. If you are just tuning in you should know, I’m crazy for cucumbers. I really love growing cucumbers of any sort, but this year I have a new (to me) variety that is trying to pry top accolades from the tendril grip of the Lemon Cuke.

This brilliant new (to me) garden star is the White Wonder Cucumber. Today it’s the throwback.

Are You Plugged In?

Are You Plugged In?

Today I had to update plugins. Not an unusual or exciting occasion. Certainly not worth writing about. However, it did cause me to look particularly long at the word plugin and realize, it’s not a word.

I mean, it is a word, spell check doesn’t even blink at it. But really, plugin, is not a word. It’s like the h in humble, we never voted to change it to umble, but somehow, that’s what it is. (Except at my house, where the h gets used each and every time it is meant to be used. I mean,  arry the enderson as a pulled amstring makes you sound like you’re doing a bad cockney impression. Dun’t it?)

All that to say this, today is shameless plug day! Here’s what I read, what I love, what I’m thinking about. I know you wanted to know. If you love them as well, tell them the Paisley Carrot sent you. I’m giving you four from each category because four is my favorite number. Read the rest of this entry
